"Racist" licorice depicting black-faced Africans has been pulled from the shelves of Swedish supermarkets after complaints from customers.

Candy maker Haribo has since apologised for its salty licorice 'Skipper Mix', The Local reports.

The company's director Ola Dagliden said he understands the criticism and thinks "it's important to listen to the customers."

He said the complaints started in December.

"After that, we made the decision to take the candy in question out of production," he said.

The "Skipper Mix" is supposed to depict a sailor's voyage around the world.
