A two-year-old boy is in a serious condition after being shot in the stomach during an alleged road rage attack in the US.

Police allege the toddler was in a car with his parents early on Saturday morning when they pulled up at a set of lights in Baltimore.

When the light changed to green, a car in front failed to drive forward so the boy's father sounded the car's horn.

After the car still failed to drive off, the father beeped the car's horn again before driving around the stopped car and around the corner.

Police believe the driver of the other car then followed the victim's family car and opened fire from his own silver Mazda.

Yesterday, investigators tracked down the alleged gunman, Javon Johnson, and placed him under arrest.

The 33-year-old has since been charged with attempted murder, assault and handgun related offences.

He was refused bail and will remain in custody until his next court date.
