Wealthy socialite Claus von Bülow was acquitted of murdering his wife on June 10, 1985, bringing the curtain down on two sensational court cases that drew global attention.

The tall, aristocratic von Bulow, third from left, was charged in the US with putting his wife, Martha "Sunny" von Bulow, into an irreversible coma to gain her fortune so he could live with his mistress.

The conviction was overturned on appeal and he was acquitted at his second trial.

Sunny von Bulow, shown here, was the heiress to a substantial fortune, with her mother's net worth estimated at $US100 million.

The case split her family: the two children of Sunny von Bulow from her first marriage accused their stepfather of attempted murder, while the couple's daughter maintained her father was innocent.

The trial had shed light on the lives of the super-rich during an era when TV shows such as Dallas and Dynasty were extremely popular.

In a referendum on June 10, 1916, residents in NSW backed the emergency wartime measure of pubs serving their last drinks at 6pm.

The Woman's Christian Temperance Union had strongly campaigned for earlier pub closing, and the government believed it would improve industrial production during World War I.

But drinkers in NSW had no clue it would be extended to 1955 when pubs were permitted to close at 10pm.

At least 28 Aboriginal people were murdered by white settlers in the Myall Creek Massacre in north-west NSW on June 10, 1838.

Later in a landmark court case, the gang of settlers responsible for the killings were successfully prosecuted by colonial authorities.

Myall Creek was one of more than 400 sites where the mass killing of Aboriginal Australians took place during the Frontier Wars, between 1788 and 1930.

The finale of the hit crime drama TV series The Sopranos, starring James Gandolfini as mob boss Tony Soprano, was screened by HBO on June 10, 2007, after six seasons.

Viewers were left puzzled by the last scenes when Tony Soprano was having dinner with his family in a restaurant and three shady characters walk in.

After he eyes them, the screen suddenly cut to black and the credits roll.
