Today in History - July 22 | Swifties turn concert into actual earthquake
Taylor Swift's reputation as a worldshaker became literal truth at a concert on July 22, 2023.
Swift, who was undertaking her record-breaking Eras tour, played to a crowd of adoring fans at Seattle's Lumen Field.
The noise from the concert and the fans was so intense it caused equivalent seismic activity to a 2.3 magnitude earthquake.
Seismologist Jackie Caplan-Auerbach told CNN she had checked the figures after seeing a post on Facebook.
"For Taylor Swift, I collected about 10 hours of data where rhythm controlled the behavior. The music, the speakers, the beat. All that energy can drive into the ground and shake it," she said.
Impressively, the recordings were nearly exactly the same for Swift's July 23 concert at the same venue.
Gangster John Dillinger was shot dead as he left a Chicago movie theatre on July 22, 1934.
The infamous outlaw was betrayed by an associate, brothel madam Ana Cumpanas, who was seeking to avoid deportation from the US.
She informed federal agents Dillinger would be going to the movies that night.
The bank robber was shot and killed as he left the Biograph Theatre and tried to run from federal agents.
It was reported that onlookers dipped their handkerchiefs in Dillinger's blood as souvenirs.
About 15,000 people are said to have viewed his body in the day and a half it was on public display at the morgue.
Norway was rocked by domestic terror attacks carried out by far-right activist Anders Breivik on July 22, 2011.
The first attack was a car bomb that went off outside Norwegian government offices in Oslo, killing eight people and injuring over 200 more.
In the second attack less than two hours later, Breivik (pictured) launched an assault on a summer camp for the youth wing of the country's centre-left Labour Party, on the island of Utoya.
Originally arriving disguised as a police officer, Breivik shot 69 people dead, many of them teenagers.
in August 2012, Breivik was sentenced to 21 years in prison with the option for indefinite five-year extensions, the maximum sentence Norwegian law allows.
The attacks have become referred to simply as 22/7 or 22 Juli in Norway, in a similar fashion to "9/11" in the US.
Breivik did not deny carrying out the attacks but claimed they were "necessary".
Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar fled his luxury prison, known as La Catedral, in Colombia on July 22, 1992.
Escobar had agreed to surrender to authorities in exchange for a reduced sentence and preferential treatment, including a prison built to his own specifications.
La Catedral included a soccer pitch, a bar, and a hot tub.
However, Escobar continued his criminal activities "behind bars" and authorities began to consider moving him to a more conventional prison.
Escobar escaped during the attempted move, having been informed ahead of time.
