Today in History - August 26: Kidnapped woman emerges after 18 years
The horrific 18-year kidnapping ordeal of Jaycee Dugard came to an end on August 26, 2009.
Dugard was 11 when she was snatched in 1991 from the street in front of her house in South Lake Tahoe, California, by a married couple.
It wasn't until 2009 when Garrido took Dugard and her children to a meeting with his parole officer that officials became suspicious of his behaviour.
He was investigated by police and Dugard's identify was discovered. The Garridos were later arrested and put on trial. Phillip was sentenced to 431 years in prison and Nancy received a sentence of 36 years to life.
