US President Barack Obama believes he would’ve won the 2016 presidential election if he had run with the same “vision” he ran with in his 2008 campaign.

In a sit-down interview with his former senior advisor David Axelrod, who now works for CNN, Mr Obama said he’s “confident” his vision of “hope and change” could have won him the election.

“You know, I am confident in this vision because I'm confident that if I had run again and articulated it, I think I could've mobilised a majority of the American people to rally behind it,” Mr Obama said in in the CNN’s The Axe Files podcast.

Mr Obama said even those who disagreed with him “would say the vision, the direction that you point towards is the right one”.

During the conversation, Mr Obama and Mr Axelrod also discussed President-elect Donald Trump’s victory and the US political landscape.

“What I would argue is, is that the culture actually did shift, that the majority does buy into the notion of a one America that is tolerant and diverse and open and - and full of energy and dynamism.”

Mr Obama also congratulated Hillary Clinton again on her run, saying she “performed wonderfully under really tough circumstances”.

Mr Trump predictably hit back on Twitter:
