The New York Daily News has attacked US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump with an unforgiving front page depicting the billionaire as the ‘antichrist’.

The preview of tomorrow’s front page was revealed after Pope Francis said that Mr Trump was ‘not Christian’, in relation to his calls to build a wall along the US-Mexico border.

“A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian,” the Pope told reporters on board the papal plane following a visit to Mexico.

“This is not the gospel.”

Revealed online this afternoon, tomorrow’s edition features the headline “ANTICHRIST!” alongside an illustration of Mr Trump in demonic form, with reptilian skin and engulfed in hell fire.

Mr Trump was quick to verbally attack the Pope following his comments, calling them “disgraceful”.

"No leader, especially a religious leader, should have the right to question another man's religion or faith," he said in statement.

"If and when the Vatican is attacked by ISIL, which as everyone knows is ISIL's ultimate trophy, I can promise you that the Pope would have only wished and prayed that Donald Trump would have been president," he said.

This is not the first time the newspaper has taken aim at the Republican frontrunner – earlier this month a front page slated his New Hampshire supporters, calling them “zombies”.
