New app reveals world of free food

A new smartphone app allows users to locate free food available in their neighbourhoods, with more than half a million opportunities listed globally.

Falling Fruit allows users to find and map the locations of fruit trees and other sources of free food.

Two US men founded the website to share the top sites for edible freebies in their hometown of Boulder, Colorado, and launched the App after demand became global.

“Every time I’m out I’ll typically blow somebody’s mind,” co-founder Ethan Welty told Fox31 Denver.

Falling Fruit was transformed into an app after the website logged 800,000 entries of free food hotspots across 50 countries.

Mr Welty said the site also helped reduce food waste, and that he hoped its success would help the environment.

“Just trying to make it as accessible to as many people as possible,” he said.

The site has also expanded from natural food resources to include waste bins at supermarkets.
