Myanmar woman jailed over OnlyFans account

A Myanmar woman has been sentenced to six years in prison for posting explicit images to her OnlyFans account, becoming the first person to be jailed for such a crime in the country.

Doctor turned model Nang Mwe San was charged two weeks ago for "harming culture and dignity", according to military authorities, and was later found guilty of "distributing nude photos and videos on social media sites for a fee".

Mwe San was a resident of Yangon's North Dagon Township - a region where martial law is in force. Those charged with crimes in such areas are tried in a military court where they're denied rights such as access to lawyers.

The model's mother told the BBC she had only found out about her daughter's sentencing through the media.

Earlier this year, a court convicted the country's ousted leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, on more corruption charges, adding six years to her earlier 11-year prison sentence

It's estimated almost 16,000 people - including Suu Kyi, lawmakers, activists and journalists - have been imprisoned since the military seized power.

Back in July, Myanmar's government announced it had carried out its first executions in nearly 50 years, hanging a former National League for Democracy lawmaker, a democracy activist and two men accused of violence.

The executions, detailed in the state-run Mirror Daily newspaper, were carried out despite worldwide pleas for clemency for the four political prisoners, including from United Nations experts.
