In pictures: Old Hollywood glamour meets avant-garde at 2023's Met Gala

Fashion's night of nights is officially underway in New York City, where Hollywood's elite have descended on the Met Gala red carpet donning their finest tributes to late creative director of French fashion house Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld.

The stars have been asked to dress "in honour of Karl" and honour the style icon they have, with a mix of extravagant and avant-garde looks lighting the red carpet on fire, including some bold risk-taking and even the use of prosthetics.

Though the night is formally to raise funds for the city's Metropolitan Museum of Art, it's best known for its star-studded guest list, which is hand-picked by none other than Vogue's Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour.

Models, actors, musicians, athletes and even politicians are in attendance tonight, including a sprinkling of Aussie A-listers such as Nicole Kidman, Keith Urban and Margot Robbie as well as Hugh Jackman and his partner Deborra Lee Furness.

The stars have channelled a mix of old Hollywood glamour as well as some surprising, unique looks, which could only be found at the annual event.
