A married lawyer has been found guilty of aggravated sexual assault after he called a woman an "Australian slut" and tipped beer over her at a party in London.

A court was told Alastair Main felt "humiliated" by "sexual rejection" when the woman refused to hug him at a Christmas dinner held at the London Rowing Club in December 2015.

This prompted Main, 35, a former national rowing champion and England representative, to drench the woman, then aged 27, the Evening Standard reports.

And moments later the former club captain followed her into the ladies' bathrooms where he "smacked her approximately five times on the backside", prosecutors said.

Main was found guilty at Wimbledon Magistrates Court of one count of racially aggravated assault and one of a sexual assault over the attack.

He claimed the slap was "cheeky" and "flirty" and denied it was sexual assault. He also denied he ever referred to the woman's nationality.

His defence lawyer, Eloise Marshall, had previously questioned the consistency of the victim's testimony.

But District Judge Barbara Barnes said she found the victim's evidence "credible and convincing".

The judge said she was "satisfied" Main had referred to the victim's nationality around the same time he poured beer over her and called her a "slut".

Main was given unconditional bail to appear on January 26 for sentencing.
