A Texas grandfather has proven you’re only as old as you feel after he refused a seat on a Rio train meant for the elderly, and instead performed a lofty gymnastic feat to showcase his youth.

Wayne McEntire, 68, was riding a train in Rio de Janeiro with his 19-year-old grandson, when a fellow passenger offered him a seat designated for elderly people.

Mr McEntire “respectfully declined”, according to his grandson, Britton Barker, before suspending himself into a flag pole lift.

A picture of the awe-inspiring stunt quickly went viral after being shared to Mr Barker’s Twitter account.

“Oops, accidentally made Papa Twitter famous,” Mr Barker tweeted.

Mr Barker told ABC News America his grandfather works out every day with light weights, and is “one of the kindest and most polite people I know”.

It has been retweeted more than 70,000 times.
