Vatican financial watchdog George Pell slammed for spending too much money

Former Sydney archbishop George Pell has been accused of spending €500,000 in six months, despite being hired by Pope Francis to cut costs.

Cardinal Pell has allegedly spent the money on business class flights, tailored religious robes and kitchen fittings, Fairfax Media reports.

At the time of his move, Cardinal Pell said he would attempt to save the Vatican "millions, if not tens of millions" of dollars a year.

Italian magazine L'Espresso reports Cardinal Pell has paid an assistant, who he brought over from Australia, a $21,600 monthly salary.

Despite Pope Francis taking residence in more humble dwellings, Cardinal Pell has reportedly spent more than $5,100 a month to rent an office and apartment at an upmarket address where he also allegedly spent almost $87,000 on furniture.

The information detailing the excessive spending is suspected to have been leaked by Vatican relates unhappy with Cardinal Pell's methods.

The leaks coincide with a speech by Pope Francis which slammed "throw-away culture" linked to globalisation, calling for new ways of thinking about poverty, welfare and employment.
