Fresh hope for Bali Nine as two other death row inmates win reprieve

The Bali Nine pair on death row have been handed a ray of hope after two other foreigners due to face an Indonesian firing squad received a temporary reprieve.

Serge Areski Atlaoui from France and Mary Jane Fiesta Veloso from the Philippines had applied for a judicial review of their execution and yesterday learned they will be allowed to have their appeals heard, Fairfax Media reports.

Both Atlaoui and Veloso are on a list of 11 death row inmates scheduled for imminent execution.

Australians Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan are also on the list.

Atlaoui was found guilty of being involved in an ecstasy factory near Jakarta but has maintained his innocence, saying he believed he was just installing equipment at an acrylics plant.

Veloso was caught bringing 2.6kg of heroin into Java in 2010.

Like Chan and Sukumaran, both had seen their requests for presidential clemency rejected.

Sukumaran and Chan were due to be moved from their Bali prison to holding cells on an island in central Java this week to await execution, but that transfer was postponed after the island prison facilities were found to be inadequate.

Whether the extra time will allow the legal appeals for Chan and Sukumaran to be heard remains unclear.
