Magnitude 6 earthquake strikes India

A magnitude 6 earthquake has struck the state of Assam in India, the US Geological Survey has reported.

The state is in the north-east of the country, south of the Himalayas.

The USGS said the quake hit at a depth of 34 kilometres, with the epicentre just 11km from the town of Dhekiajuli.

There have been reports of damage and casualties but no official information released.

State MLA Ashok Singhal said that as yet there were no reports of casualties.

It is another blow to a country currently reeling before a COVID-19 crisis, with new case records set daily in the past week.
