Canadian thieves steal $150,000 worth of maple syrup

A Quebec shipping company has been left stumped after $150,000 (AU$151,353) worth of maple syrup was stolen from a yard on the Island of Montreal.

Mexuscan Cargo is offering a financial reward to find the thieves, who broke into the company’s yard in Dorval on August 8, loaded a shipping container with around 20,000kg of one-litre bottles of the sugary syrup and broke through a fence to flee, according to the Toronto Sun.

Mexuscan Cargo vice-president Alfredo Monaco said the thieves must have known they were in possession of “liquid gold”, but may find it difficult to sell on as the bottles were distinctly labelled.

"You can't just sell this stuff at the corner store," he said.

"That's why we're offering a $10,000 reward if we can recoup the freight."

Quebec’s Federation of Maple Syrup Producers say the province provides around 70 percent of world maple syrup output.
