Belgian transport minister resigns amid claims she ignored security lapses at Brussels airport

Belgian Minister for Mobility Jacqueline Galant has reportedly resigned following claims she was aware of two “scathing” reports criticising Belgian airport security prior to the March 22 attacks.

Ms Galant is expected to present her resignation this morning during the Council of Ministers, Belgian newspaper De Tijd reports.

It comes after two reports criticising management of security in Belgian airports were leaked to the public.

Ms Galant is alleged to have been aware of both reports, released in 2011 and 2015, yet failed to act on them.

Laurent Ledoux, outgoing head of the Galant administration, has tendered his own resignation over his senior minister’s alleged “incompetence”.

Ms Galant’s alleged failings have come under particularly scrutiny following a series of coordinated attacks in Brussels by terrorists last month.

Thirty-two people died and over 300 were injured after three nail bombs were detonated in the busy Zaventem Airport and Maalbeek metro station in Brussels.

The attacks, carried out by three suicide bombers, have since been claimed by ISIL.

The bombings are regarded as the deadliest act of terrorism in the history of Belgium.
