Royal Australian Navy sailor dies after being found unconscious while on shore leave in Oman

A Royal Australian Navy sailor has died in Oman while on shore leave.

The sailor was deployed on Operation Manitou on the HMAS Darwin, and was in Muscat during a scheduled port visit, the Department of Defence said in a statement.

He was found unconscious in the city and could not be revived despite medical treatment.

An investigation into the death is underway, with local authorities in Oman assisting.

The death could be linked to dangerous bodybuilding supplements, ABC News reported.

Reporter Andrew Greene said it was believed the 22-year-old sailor was found unconscious in a hotel room by shipmates, who were unable to revive their colleague.

The sailor reportedly may have purchased and consumed the bodybuilding supplements in Muscat.

The Department said it was providing support to the sailor's shipmates and family.
