At least three people have died and a further 40 have been injured after a passenger train crashed in the town of Hermalle-sous-Huy in Belgium’s east.

The BBC reports the passenger train crashed into the back of a goods train travelling on the same track, according to Belgium’s rail infrastructure manager, Infrabel.

Officials have indicated at least three people have died and a further 40 have been injured.

“A train… crashed into the back of a freight train on the same track,” Belgian railways operator SNCB said in statement issued by Infrabel.

“The collision derailed two of the six carriages.”

The crash occurred before midnight on Sunday, local time.
