Doctors say Gammy has a healthy heart

Thai doctors caring for abandoned surrogate baby Gammy have said that his heart is functioning normally, alleviating earlier fears of a potentially life-threatening condition.

Gammy, who has Down Syndrome, was suffering from pneumonia and is now almost completely cured, the Bangkok Post reports.

He may be fit to leave hospital within days.

The revelations come after almost $240,000 in public donations flowed in for his ongoing care.

A spokesman from the Samitivej Siracha Hospital said that Gammy was initially brought to doctors with breathing difficulties.

"He has pneumonia which is quite a normal ailment for children of this age," the spokesman said.

“We had a cardiology expert run a check on his heart and we are happy to say he has no heart disease to worry about.”

Also present at the announcement was Gammy and his sister’s birth mother, Pattaramon Chanbua, the surrogate who carried the twins for Australian couple David and Wendy Farnell.

She said she would be happy to have Gammy’s sister returned to her care after hearing that David Farnell has a string of prior child sex offences.

In a statement released to Australian media via a family friend on Tuesday, the Farnells had claimed that in the days following the twins’ birth, they were told that Gammy only had days to live due to an apparent heart defect.

They subsequently left with only their daughter, drawing widespread condemnation.
