Arrested Aust doctor gets passport back

An Australian skin cancer doctor accused of child pornography offences in Canada has been allowed to fly back to Australia.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police Sergeant Leanne Butler said she gave Stephen Peter Menzies Murray his Australian passport on Tuesday morning.

The 57-year-old will be required to return to Canada's Prince Edward Island to deal with the charges when the court requests him.

"Our investigation in all intents and purposes here has concluded and it is in the court process so we expect that he will come back whenever he is required," Sgt Butler told AAP on Thursday.

Murray was arrested on Prince Edward Island on October 3 after a member of the public reported what Canadian authorities described as "suspicious activity".

Murray, the principal and director of a Rockhampton skin and laser centre, was charged with making, possessing and distributing child pornography and faces a maximum of 14 years' jail on each count if found guilty.

Supreme Court Justice Wayne Cheverie on Monday lifted a condition that required Murray to remain on Prince Edward Island.

The RCMP said it had reached out to Australian authorities and a joint investigation had been launched into Murray's activities.

Murray, from Frenchville, Queensland, planned to visit Prince Edward Island for a few days before his arrest, authorities said.
