Most of us change pillowcases regularly, but would be hard pressed to remember the last time we washed our actual pillows (if ever).

Unfortunately, even if you're replacing your pillowcases twice a week, you're not escaping the filthy pillow underneath.

According to a new study by American polyurethane company Dow Polyurethanes, after two years of use one-third of your pillow's weight contains dead skin, bugs, dust mites, and their waste.

So gross.

The report also found there are health issues associated with your grotty pillow.

It found that a restless night's sleep can be traced back to your dirty pillow, and 10 percent of people, and 80 percent of allergy sufferers, are allergic to the proteins found in decomposed dust mites and their waste.

Given that regular lack of least sleep can contribute to serious health issues like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, it's time for investing in washable pillows and throwing them in the wash every three to six months.
