This is what couples fight about when redoing their homes

Anyone who has ever watched The Block, or even just lived with a significant other, knows all too well the hell that can break loose when you’re renovating or redecorating your living quarters.

And we’re not alone. According to The 2018 Houzz Remodelling & Relationships Survey released this week, 33 percent of respondents found sprucing up their home with a partner a frustrating experience, with seven percent even considering breaking up during the course of a project. (Cough, no idea what they’re talking about.)

It turns out one of the biggest gripes when it comes to styling shared space is decorative items, with one in five respondents taking issue with their loved one’s taste in miscellaneous décor choices.

The most offensive items were posters and other artwork, with 52 percent of people just not feeling that vintage Space Jam poster, sorry lads.

Other no-nos included sports memorabilia (24%), childhood toys and mementos (24% of us are heartless?) and homemade art (18%).

When taking on a large home project, nearly a third of respondents found the biggest challenge to be agreeing on products, materials and finishes. (I said I wanted the marble, Michael!)

Twenty-nine percent bemoaned the lack of communication, 25 percent found it hard to stick to the budget, and 25 percent got riled up over those aforementioned styling choices.

It’s not all bad news, though.

Despite the challenges (read: 2am fights about paint colour), 96 percent of respondents say the finished product was worth the effort.

Seven in 10 report feeling more comfortable, and 57 percent are happier at home.
