Melbourne Cup winner plans to buy a 'bigger house’ with prize money

Melbourne Cup 2018’s winner, jockey Kerrin McEvoy, has confirmed plans for his prize money – to buy a bigger home for his family.

Sydney-based McEvoy rode Cross Counter to victory, his third triumph in the Melbourne Cup. It comes just two years after his last victory - with Almandin in 2016.

Speaking to Channel 7, he said: “I promised (my four kids) a swimming pool. And (wife) Cathy and myself have been looking around for a bigger house.

“I said to one of the Herald Sun reporters yesterday that if I won I would buy Cathy a new house, so look out.”

However, the jockey only makes five per cent of yesterday’s $4 million prize pool, meaning McEvoy takes home $200,000. In Sydney’s property market, this doesn’t equate to much, especially if they’re after a pool.

However, McEvoy has previously split an investment in Essendon with his wife, 2015 Melbourne Cup winner Michelle Payne’s sister, Cathy.

The pair, along with Michelle, their other sister Therese and her husband, and jockey Luke Currie, sold the $440,000 investment property they bought in 2004 for $1.21 million, according to realestate.com.au.
