After the runaway success of her Netflix series Tidying Up with Marie Kondo – which sees her enter various overflowing American homes with the hopes of guiding those inside to live more pared back lives – the Japanese decluttering expert spoke to Hello Giggles about what special objects she can’t and won’t live without.

Three items that spark joy in Marie Kondo's home

As well as the crystal in her bedroom, Marie loves “my earthen pot, ‘donabe,’ in which I cook special rice, and my antique writing desk.”

When it comes to luxury items, Marie admitted she invests in organic cotton pyjamas and indulges “frequently in linens.”

She also likes to keep her mind as uncluttered as her home, and says she has an air purification ritual she performs every evening.

She also does a little yoga session with her (insanely cute) children to help everyone wind down for the night.

The difference between US and Japanese homes

Speaking about the cultural difference in how people tidied based on where they’re from, Marie told Hello Giggles the contrasts had been much less than she had expected – with one amusing difference.

“In the United States, many homes have multiple bathrooms, while in Japan, a single bathroom is customary,” she explained.

“This has been a learning experience for me as I help families tidy, because it can be more challenging to keep all of the items in the same category in one spot when you have several rooms to choose from!”
