Dolce and Gabbana make the unlikely move to refrigerators
Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana are well-known for paying overstated homage Sicily and their Italian heritage in their runway collections. In a somewhat unlikely move, the designers are translating their richly coloured tributes to their country into the seemingly un-glamourous world of refrigeration.
Teaming up with Italian appliance brand Smeg, the odd collaboration has produced 100 limited-edition FAB28 hand-painted refrigerators in prints from past collections, by artists specially commissioned by Dolce and Gabbana.
For now there are four designs, two painted by the Bevilacqua brothers, Antonio and Giuseppe, and two painted by mother and daughter Adriana Zambonelli and Tiziana Nicosia.Each of the hand-painted pieces are totally unique, but consistent with the style of the fashion label - from stories of Sicilian barrows, motifs of the Trinacria symbol and the marionettes to the Italian lemons and fruits, the colour palette of predominantly red, yellow, teal and Mediterranean blue.
If you've decided there's a space in your kitchen for a bold homage to Sicilian folklore, the range will be available through Smeg and Dolce & Gabbana for around $44,922 (cough).
The full collection will be presented at next week's Milan’s Design Fair, Salone Internazionale del Mobile 2016 (April 13), at a glittering party to be held at Dolce & Gabbana’s Metropol Bar.
