This DIY chunky knitted blanket technique is the only thing you need for winter

Now we've officially waved the last weeks of summer goodbye, it's time to start bunking down and making our homes feel cosy for winter.

The chill is definitely starting to settle in and it's hard to beat the snuggly feeling of wrapping yourself up in a chunky throw.

But a plush wool throw can set you back upwards of $300 — which takes a bit of joy out of the whole situation. If you're not too keen to make that much of an investment, there is another option.

You could make your own and it's a surprisingly easy DIY thanks to the US-based company Ohhio, who have everything you need to whip up your own luxe throw.  

Created by Anna Marinenko, Ohhio offers an cheap and chic way to create your own beautiful merino wool at home using your arms. Marinenko launched the company in December 2015, via a Kickstarter campaign, bringing her love of chunky knit to the mainstream.

As the video above shows, the easy technique is both practical and could feel quite meditative as an isolation activity.

Super-sized balls of yarn in a variety of beautiful hues, from blush pink to sunshine yellow, can be purchased from the Ohhio online store for $53 AUD. The chunky yarn is a seamless cotton tube with a pillow-style filling, making it thick and snuggly once knitted.

If you're not too keen on knitting with your arms, you can pick up a kit which has everything you need to make your blanket (including needles) starting at $191 AUD for a small blanket.

But we know DIY isn't for everyone and they do have options of buying a ready made blanket on the site, although it is more pricey.

With ideas like this out there, winter isn't looking too bad now.
