How to make a mini succulent Christmas tree

These succulent Christmas trees are very cool and actually quite simple to make. If you’re short on space and want a small tree, this could be perfect for you.

They also make for a fabulous table centrepiece and are a quirky spin on a traditional Christmas.

You will need:

• Sphagnum moss
• Small cone frame
• Geotextile fabric or breathable liner
• Mix of large, medium and small potted succulents or cuttings (think Echeveria, Aeonium, Crassula, Sempervivum, Sedum, Agave and Cotyledons)
• Bucket
• Succulent potting mix

Step 1

Fill bucket with water and pre-soak sphagnum moss.

Step 2

Cut and line inside of cone with geotextile fabric or similar, ensuring edges overlap. You could also fashion a cone out of chicken wire.

Step 3

Stuff moss inside cone, making sure you squeeze out any excess water.

Step 4

Stand frame in pot and line sides with sphagnum moss.

Step 5

Plant larger succulents into corners of pot. Backfill with potting mix.

Step 6

Cut a slit into fabric or use a chopstick to make a small hole and insert a large or medium succulent or cutting. 

Stuff hole with extra moss to secure. Repeat to cover frame.

Step 7

Fill gaps with smaller succulents or moss.
