Five kids’ rooms trends to try

The Blockheads are all excited to design and create a kid focused bedroom, with some very different ideas underway. So, what’s on trend in 2017 when it comes to children’s rooms?

Check out the top five things making big impact with little humans!

1. Gender neutral bases are key

Non gender specific pallets are huge right now. Try reaching for the greys, which offer a simple, fresh but complementary base from which to work from. It pairs well with bright colours and pastels so you can mix and match your style easily.

2. Wallpaper adds a playful touch

Let your wallpaper lead the way – create a feature wall and use the colours and patterns to inspire all the other elements in your room. Sara Hingle, owner and creative director of ‘These Walls’, says that wallpaper works so well because it delivers so much. “By adding this one element to a room, it immediately personalises the [space],” she says. “Whether you are going for a playful, edgy or even a softer space, wallpaper can immediately get a feel across without having to work too hard. There is no need to co-ordinate a hundred accessories to work up a 'feel' or 'theme' - install the wallpaper and bang, it’s done!”  Georgia and Ronnie are obviously being adventurous with their ceiling paper this week, while Sarah has sourced a stunning zebra print for her walls. 3. It’s (so) easy being green
Mint hues and forest leaves are competing with mountains to win the look of the year. Inspired by adventure and big dreams, parents are decorating with green which also picks up a broader trend towards bringing the outdoors in. Use decals, pillows, colourful rugs and even adding (safe) plants to the space to feature green without going overboard. To really embrace the mountain vibe, just add a rock wall like Sticks and Wombat! (This kid’s room was styled by ex-Blockhead Bec and it combines some of the best elements of this trend.)

4. Magical vintage inspires memories
Wrought iron bedheads, velvet, lace and twinkling fairy lights all deliver in spades when it comes to creating a whimsical feeling in a bedroom. Channel nostalgia with classic wooden toys as decorative pieces, or string a canopy from the ceiling. Add woven wall-hangings to walls and quilted throws and knitted rugs to beds. Georgia is right on trend with the styling choices she’s made for her room this week.
