Here’s what your future drone-friendly apartment might look like

The age of drones is upon us, and they’re set to become an everyday part of our lives. So it was only a matter of time before architects began dreaming up ways to incorporate drone activity into our built environment.

Mechanical engineer Charles Bombardier, part of the Bombardier family, who build planes, trains and snowmobiles, has offered his interpretation of what a drone friendly apartment looks like.

Described by Wired as a visionary, Bombardier tells us architects and developers are geared up for the drone revolution, and it could be coming sooner than we think.

His “futuristic condo building” features large balconies built to house small electric aircraft or shipping drones, where you “wouldn’t need to buy your own drone, you’d simply order a ride with an app like a taxi— and hop in right from your terrace.”

In collaboration with industrial designer Ashish Thulkar, Bombardier’s design offers private drone balconies for each unit, with retractable handrails so the landings would double as usable balconies.

Bombardier proposes that balconies could become more useful, without the need for high-rise stairs and elevators.
