Couple’s garage becomes their chic new home

Many of us have a dream that one day we’ll pack up everything, sell off what we can, and live out our hippy dreams Eat, Pray, Love style on an extended sabbatical.
Three years ago, Bryan and Jen Danger of Portland, Oregon, decided to take a chance and give this idea a go — first moving to British Columbia for Jen’s job and then enjoying a yearlong road trip south through Mexico and Central America in a 1967 van.
Before hitting the road, they sold most of their possessions and rented out their early-1970s home.
On their return, the couple decided they wanted to stay in Portland for most of the year but couldn’t afford their mortgage, so they kept tenants in the main house, renovated their garage and moved in. This meant the renters cover the mortgage, while Bryan and Jen live mortgage and rent free.
The couple did most of the renovation themselves, creating an industrial-chic space which features hardwood joinery and double-duty furniture, to make the most of the small layout.
Take a look at the results in the video above.
