Australia's sustainable projects dominate the WAF 2015 short list

Australia has the largest number of projects in this year's World Architecture Festival, which includes entries from 46 countries.

Aussie projects include Lyons and Conrad Gargett's green-and purple-finned Children's Hospital in Brisbane and a Sydney tower by Rogers, Stirk, Harbour and Partners.

Unsurprisingly, the big trends driving this year's Australian entries have been sustainability, sharing economy, human connection and connection to place. One of the most exciting homes to come emerge from this year's entries is Andrew Maynard Architect's' Tower House, which was built around the concept of community. A communal vegetable garden sits at the front of the home for neighbours to enjoy.

Warragul House by Architects Corner is another standout for sustainable design. The home was designed to filter in natural light all day through a concave- shaped north-facing facade with glazed openings.

While the team from BVN have been nominated for Project Zero, a former post-war transformed into fully sustainable, contemporary home.

They'll fight it out against buildings by major international firms including Zaha Hadid Architects, Foster and Partners, OMA and BIG and Australian office John Wardle Architects.
