EXCLUSIVE: After being caught out for secretly catching up with an ex, Sara was determined to make it up to her husband Tim.

During Sunday night's Commitment Ceremony, Tim chose to 'leave' the experiment but Sara's decision to 'stay' means they both have to stick around for at least another week.

While some co-stars went as far as to brand Sara's decision to stay as "cruel", the bride has since explained the real reason why she chose to keep herself and Tim in the experiment.

"Tim and I discussed our decisions before the Commitment Ceremony and he explained that he was going to write 'leave'. He said, 'I need to stand my ground'," Sara told 9Entertainment.

"He kind of left it to me and said, 'Hey, if you want to make this work then write 'stay' – that's up to you."

Despite some of her co-star's assumptions, Sara was clear that she didn't choose to stay for her own interest.

"I didn't decide to stay to be malicious or to save my name," Sara said.

"I didn't want to make a decision that would make [Tim] uncomfortable and I had to show him that I obviously wanted to make things work."

Sara said she had good reason to believe that she and Tim would turn things around in the week to come.

"He was giving me those little signs here and there that he still wanted it to work, he just needed me to put in a lot of the effort – which was understandable.

"I could sense in the way he was responding to me and allowing me to hug him or allowing me to have a conversation, I knew that he wanted me there.

"The timing of everything coming out wasn't great because Tim and I were doing so well after the Retreat, it was the first time we were really connected and I could see a future with him.

"The both of us were holding on to that moment and were really hopeful."
