Getaway host answers the one question people ask her the most after cancer diagnosis

Getaway host and country musician Sam McClymont has marked one year since she was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer.

Sam, 39, is now cancer-free, and in a poignant message shared to social media she wrote: "I thought it was time to reflect on the last 12 months and answer any questions anyone had."

In a series of Q&A style posts, Sam answered her followers most common questions and spoke on her diagnosis, remaining positive and navigating cancer with two young kids.

Sam said that by far the question she is asked most is simply: how is she actually feeling?

"It really has been a rollercoaster, the last year," Sam began.

"The further it has gone into treatment, the harder it is. That's because it just seems never-ending. You want your life to return to what it was, but instead you have appointments, low energy and complications and side effects from treatment."

Sam opened up about having "high health anxiety", getting nervous ahead of medical appointments and developing a phobia of needles which she never had before.

While Sam admitted to feeling "stuck" between a past and future version of herself, she said that even through all the challenges she has "complete appreciation to live in this incredible country".

"The fact we have all of these treatments available and medical professionals who show up to work everyday so that someone like me can live into old age, makes my heart so full and happy," she said.

Sam's health and two young boys are her top priority, although she said navigating cancer with children has been really tough.

"We were very honest with our children that it was cancer and explained what they would expect to see me go through," she said.

"They have watched me lie in bed for days. Vomit for hours on end. Have seen my arms and stomach covered in deep bruises. Watched my hair fall out and eventually helped shave it off. They have seen me cry when it has all become too much."

While the year passed had been filled with "inescapable challenges" for the mum-of-two, Sam was feeling hopeful saying "the future looks positively wondrous".

"I can't wait to show them the mum they have missed out on for the last 12 months," she wrote.

Sam's followers were deeply moved by her reflection on the past year.

"You are an inspiration and sharing your story is really helpful," one commented.

While another said, "Thank you for sharing. Wishing you loads of strength as you move into this next stage. I'm sure there are many happy days ahead."

Sam's cancer journey

Sam was first diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer in February 2024, after discovering a suspicious lump while playing with her sons.

Initially, Sam was told she was clear of cancer but another MRI and biopsy later and Sam discovered she'd been misdiagnosed and had the most aggressive form of breast cancer that affects just 10 to 15 percent of those that have it.

Her treatment included five months of chemotherapy and immunotherapy and then 15 rounds of radiation, three surgeries, a lumpectomy and double mastectomy and reconstruction to be followed by another year of chemotherapy.

In January 2025 was elated to share with family, friends and her followers that she was cancer-free.

While at first Sam was reluctant to be so transparent with her cancer journey, she told 9Entertainment she was "glad" she took the leap to be vulnerable.

"Cancer can be such an isolating experience so it's nice to know that I could share and be met with so much love and support," Sam said.

"It's been such a wonderful surprise to find a community online that have those shared experiences and a lot of new friendships have been created as well."
