US Couple build their 'dream' Yellowstone home from scratch - and reveal 'incredible' results

Mark and Erica are living every Yellowstone fans' dream.

They decided to build their very own self-sufficient home along one of the most famous rivers in the USA, the Yellowstone River.

In an episode of Building Off The Grid – which you can watch for free on 9Now – Mark, Erica and their three children packed their bags to begin construction on their "dream" property.

But here's the catch.

"We had no idea what we were getting ourselves into," said Erica.

Nestled above the gorgeous banks of the Yellowstone River in Montana, the family – and their constructions site – were surrounded by nothing but nature.

"We saw a moose track, we see a lot of deer, we've also seen a mountain lion track which is a little concerning," the mum added. "But it's going to add to the excitement."

In the episode, we get to know the Lighthiser family.

The family of five lived in Livingston, Montana, years ago but after months of travelling decided it was time to make the move back.

"We just missed Montana, we came back to this area and really fell deeply in love with it again," said Erica.

The homebuilders secured a stunning four acre lot boasting open land, great southern orientation and "a lot of space".

"Then of course, it's a stones throw away from the Yellowstone River, which happens to be the longest free flowing river in the USA," Erica added.

Mark and Erica gave themselves 16 weeks to build their dream home from scratch, and with a total budget of US110,000 (AU$166,993).

But six weeks into their self-set challenge, they hit a snag.

"We're starting to go quite a bit over budget," revealed Erica. "We're trying not to freak out."

Mark explained that unless you have a licensed builder, it's very difficult to get a construction loan in the US.

"We're just sort of overwhelmed by the size and scope of this project," he admitted. "This underlying pressure of, 'Are we even going to get close to completing?'"

But after 18 long weeks, the Lighthiser family finally finished building.

"We're pretty psyched," said Mark over their new home and Yellowstone property.

"Look at the view these kids have, it's incredible," said one friend.

"It's kind of an awesome feeling," Mark concluded.
