Eliza and Liberty discover why a woman's ovaries could be the secret to a longer, healthier life on Do You Want To Live Forever?

When we think about a woman's ovaries, it's unsurprising that our first thoughts are about fertility.

But healthy ovaries are not just important for having children.

They could actually be the secret to life longevity too.

Professor Karla Hutt is leading research into the life-prolonging power of ovaries and on Do You Want To Live Forever? she told sisters and former The Block participants Eliza and Liberty how they play a part in keeping us healthy.

"That's because they produce hormones like oestrogen which are essential for our overall health and wellbeing," professor Hutt explained.

Hormones produced by ovaries regulate cholesterol, bone density, cognitive health, blood pressure, collagen levels and blood sugar.

Medical expert Dr. Nick Coatsworth said women are born with all of the eggs and follicles they will ever have, and from the moment they are born these numbers will start to decrease.

Professor Hutt's research is into whether we can slow down or even halt our ovaries ageing process.

"If we could extend the ability of our ovaries to produce those hormones, then there is the potential to age in a healthier way," she told Eliza and Liberty.

Until then, there are things women can do to prolong the health of their ovaries – and therefore help their overall wellbeing.
