Beloved Aussie holiday hotspot that's 40 per cent cheaper this winter
Taking a holiday in the middle of winter is a no-brainer.
Whether you want to chase the sun and head north to a warmer destination, or you're a snow bunny keen to hit the slopes and stay cozy by the fire, a mid-winter holiday is a great way to break up the season.
And as an added bonus, some destinations can be a lot cheaper than travelling during summer.

Though most Aussie travel destinations are considered summer hotspots, there's a lot to explore in the cooler months.
Experiences like humpback whale watching, truffle season, lakeside sauna and cold plunges, quieter coastal walks and less crowded theme parks are all the hallmarks of winter travel Down Under.
One in two Aussies is planning a domestic winter break, with most prioritising short breaks close to home and value for money.
So, where to go?
For some inspiration, Expedia has released its list of "Stay Here" winter destinations, which are all cheaper and significantly less crowded in winter compared to summer, while also offering unique seasonal experiences.

Byron Bay remains stunning year-round. Expedia Group
The famous NSW town of Byron Bay tops the list, with data showing it can be up to 40 per cent cheaper to visit in winter than during summer.
And it's not like the classic Byron activities are out the window - winter temperatures here average 20 degrees, so beach trips are still definitely on the cards.
"It's still warm enough for a swim, it's easier to get bookings at the best restaurants in town and it's the perfect time for a hinterland road trip or uncrowded Cape Byron coastal walk," Sarah King, Expedia Travel Expert, tells nine.com.au.
Surfers can also enjoy the epic winter waves, or you can head up to the lighthouse for the best views of migrating humpback whales.
The hinterland is also a must-visit, with rainfall making the greenery even lusher and the waterfalls at full force. The cooler weather is perfect for hiking, too.
On rainy days, you can stay cosy at spots like The Farm, or visit Stone & Wood Brewery and Cape Byron Distillery.

Next on Expedia's list is Apollo Bay, less than three hours' drive from Melbourne on the Great Ocean Road. During winter, not only is it 35 per cent cheaper, but it's also 90 per cent quieter than a visit during summer.
Come here for a relaxing road trip vibe, with misty mornings, rugged scenery and unhurried Great Ocean Road drives.
The town is known as a "paradise by the sea," with fresh local seafood (try the Southern Rock Lobster), stunning beaches that are perfect for long walks, whale watching, fishing spots, and great coastal hikes.

South Australia's Kangaroo Island is another spot that's 35 per cent cheaper to visit during winter.
Anyone who loves food and wildlife absolutely needs to take the trip here at least once. And winter is the perfect time to do it, when it's a lot quieter, and you can soak up the rugged scenery.
"Kangaroo Island arguably comes into its own in winter," Sarah says.
"Cooler temperatures mean kangaroos, koalas, echidnas and sea lions are easier to spot during the day, while migrating whales can be spotted off the coast."
"Winter is also ideal for long winery lunches, local seafood and fireside tastings at the island's distilleries and cellar doors."
The island is lush and dramatic, and during winter has vibrant greenery, abundant wildlife, and cozy, quiet evenings by the fire. You might even be lucky enough to see a newborn joey.
Rounding out the top five of Expedia's best value winter spots is Margaret River, just south of Perth, and Coffs Harbour in NSW.
