When it comes to air travel, the world is split into two types of people: window and aisle.

While some people love to gaze out the window undisturbed for the whole trip, others prefer the accessibility and ease that comes with a seat on the aisle.

But which one is actually superior?

Well, a new survey has determined the most popular seats on an airplane, and it turns out that window seats come out on top.

According to a survey done by travel site Upgrade Points, the number one most coveted spot on a plane is seat 1A.

This first-class bulkhead seat has plenty of legroom, no annoying people in front of you reclining their chair, and uninterrupted views out the window.

Plus, you get to be one of the first people on and off the plane.

This response is based on a Boeing 737-800 seat map - over a thousand passengers were shown the map and asked to choose which would be their ideal seat.

The two next most coveted seats were in economy: 7A and 7F, both window seats with lots of legroom.

"Parents with small kids often favour the bulkhead seats in row 7, as they provide extra space for movement and easier access to overhead bins," experts at Upgraded Points wrote.

"Additionally, being at the front of a section, bulkhead seats in row 7 often experience less foot traffic, providing a slightly calmer environment for passengers."

In fourth place came 1F, the other first-class window seat, followed by 7C (an economy aisle) in fifth.

Exit row window seats came in at sixth and seventh on the list. Only 41 per cent of people surveyed said that they'd be happy to take on the extra responsibility of the exit row in return for that spacious leg room.

Overall, exactly two-thirds of respondents chose window seats, while 32 per cent of people opted for an aisle.

Strangely, 1.7 per cent of people said their favourite seat is in the middle.
