'Truly no words' after captain makes announcement on board cruise in the middle of the night

Tina Dalton

I was fortunate enough to travel to Antarctica with Scenic a few years back so when the opportunity arose to head to the northern pole (another place I had not been) I did not need much convincing.

The Arctic is made up of eight different countries but I was heading straight to Greenland, one of the most unspoilt, vast landscapes on the planet.

It is rich in Indigenous culture, Viking history, and wildlife - all things I was excited to witness and learn more about.

Day one on Scenic Eclipse and the view out my window was astonishing - icebergs and whales!

Each day, weather permitting, we were out on the Zodiac, exploring the wonders of this spectacular area, which in all honesty does not live up to its name. Eighty per cent of Greenland is covered in ice, which doesn't leave much room for "greenery".

I was more than happy to become an ice nerd though and learn about the make up and character of this ice-shaped wonderland.

In these regions, where you are in the hands of the weather gods, things can change on a dime. Going completely off plan, we visited the Bernstorff Fjord. We were taken on shore to get a close up look at the tundra, including native mosses and lichens, that come through during the short summer months.

Scenic Eclipse's Discovery Team are always on hand to share their knowledge whether it be about the history, the wildlife, the plants or the ice. They are happy to chat whilst taking the Zodiac out or you can catch up with them over a meal or drink on board.

Every day there is something to keep you busy, which means usually the nights are left for sleeping, unless of course the Northern Lights decide to appear.

The captain made an announcement through the PA, waking guests, asking us to come to the decks to witness this absolutely magical natural occurrence. There truly are no words for the colourful lights that bounce around the sky.

Watch the video above.

Although much of this country is ice there are still a few coastal towns and villages that we got to discover. The biggest town in Southern Greenland is Qaqatorq, with a population of about 3500 in summer.

Heading further around the coast, we stopped at Nuuk, the Greenlandic capital, home to around 19,000 of the 57,000 total population. A wonderful local guide showed me around town and took me to a restaurant where I savoured the sustainably produced chemical free musk ox spring rolls and smoked reindeer.

One of the real highlights of travelling with Scenic is the insight into local life. We stopped at a local home and Safina, the homeowner, invited us in for kaffemik - a Greenlandic tradition where people open their homes for visitors to drop in for coffee and cake. She had made the loveliest cakes, including a carrot cake with fresh grated carrot on the top - it was delicious.

Continuing along the coast and sitting about 250 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle was Ilulissat, which means iceberg in Greenlandic. The town is best known for its ice fjord, which covers an area the same size at 66,000 football fields.

It really was something to see but not the only thing. I was so thrilled to be able to visit Arctic Living Ilulissat where I got to meet the welcoming Greenlandic sled dogs and the most adorable puppies while learning about camping Arctic style on the pack ice.

From the burgs to the glaciers and the captivating wildlife, this remote part of the world is a "sensory overload" in the best possible way.
