Two words during check-in make this hotel a sweet tooth’s dream

Unless it’s your very first time at a hotel, you can usually predict the conversation you’ll have while checking in: Your room is on x floor, the gym is on x floor, checkout is at x time.

But on arrival at Melbourne’s Mövenpick Hotel, there’s one phrase that will catch you off-guard in the best possible way: “Our complimentary Chocolate Hour is from 2 to 3.” Let that sink in: Chocolate. Hour.

For the sweet-toothed among us, the promise of 60 minutes of free, chef-made chocolate treats each day – without needing to leave the hotel – will be reason enough to book a stay (and perhaps never leave).

But the Mövenpick Hotel Melbourne on Spencer has more to offer.

The location

The four-star hotel’s Spencer Street location could not be more convenient, particularly if you’re coming in from the airport – it’s across the street from Southern Cross Station, home to the CBD’s SkyBus terminal.

This area is part of the Free Tram Zone, with stops mere footsteps away, and the train station adds to your public transport options.

But you’re also within easy walking distance of many of the city’s landmark spots, including Bourke St Mall.

The room

There are eight accommodation options: six rooms (including two accessible room options) and two suites. I was lucky enough to stay in the Superior Suite, which, at 41m square, might just be bigger than my Sydney apartment.

You can really get your steps up walking from the spacious living area – with a lounge, coffee table and wall divider – past the king-sized bed to the bathroom, complete with a bathtub, rainfall shower and double vanity.

Rather than a closed-door wardrobe, you’ve got a clothing rail and shelves to unpack into.

The room is largely black and white, with pops of colour courtesy of the emerald lounge and bed bench, and two colourful artworks flanking the 65″ TV.

If you can tear yourself away from your new abode, there’s a covered, outdoor heated lap pool, spa and sauna to enjoy on level 2.

The food

In a city famous for its dining options, a hotel restaurant needs to be seriously good to convince guests not to wander further afield.

I do not say this lightly: book in for at least one meal at Miss Mi Melbourne during your stay.

The restaurant – promising “a culinary journey to the heart of Asia” – has received a 2026 Australian Good Food Guide Chef’s Hat, while executive chef Migo Razon was a Chef of the Year finalist at the 2026 Victorian Accommodation Awards.

It’s hard to pick a favourite of the signature dishes I sampled, but the Humpty Doo barramundi fritter ‘de la reyna’ with Burong Gulay and nasturtium packed a flavourful punch, and I loved testing the structural integrity of bao buns with piles of sisig – a mouthwatering mix of twice-cooked pork, calamansi and egg yolk.

Miss Mi Melbourne’s ground-level location, with windows looking out onto Bourke St, adds to the experience. Who doesn’t love lunch with a side of people watching?

You can also stop by for a drink at the bar – like a cocktail with one of the venue’s bespoke gins, a collaboration with local distillery Little Lon.

The hotel’s buffet breakfast is also served in the restaurant. All the classics are there, but as a fan of a savoury brekky, I made a beeline for the congee station, with toppings like crispy chili oil and fried shallots.

Now, for the sweets.

At the lobby-adjacent Mövenpick café, you can get your fix of coffee, chocolate and baked goods, and there are six ice cream flavours to try.

Good news: guests 12 and under get unlimited free ice cream. (Sadly, I do not pass for 12.)

This is also where Chocolate Hour is hosted. Due to a prior commitment, I couldn’t check in before 3pm, so I didn’t experience the frenzy firsthand. But having sampled some of the treats in my room later, I can confirm: delicious.

The verdict

Whether you’re a Melburnian in need of a city staycation or a visitor seeking a centrally located base, the Mövenpick Hotel Melbourne on Spencer is a solid choice – especially you’re chocoholically inclined.

Comfy bed and tasty food aside, as someone who gets a little anxious about arriving at the airport with enough time to spare, knowing the SkyBus was just a dash across the road when the time came was a huge drawcard.

After all, less time faffing around equals more time to scoff down one last sweet treat.
