Remote working has become a way of life for many employees lucky enough to be allowed to unhook from their desks or having a job where a 'workation' is possible.

Now the top spots around the world to set up with a laptop have been named by a hybrid working company.

Cities were scored across twelve criteria, including climate, broadband internet, availability of flexible workspaces, availability and cost of digital nomad visas and proximity to beaches, mountains, or national parks for downtime.

Not surprisingly Tokyo in Japan, already a hotspot for holidays, came out on top.

The busy city scored highly for its super fast internet broadband speeds, transport infrastructure, safety, culture, and digital nomad visa which grants stays up to 12 months at a competitive cost according to IWG's third annual Work from Anywhere Barometer.

But the city is also not far from mountains, coasts, and national parks making it ideal for hybrid workers who want to get away from their inbox the research said.

Mark Dixon, Founder and CEO of IWG, said they're seeing more workers extending trips to work remotely or becoming digital nomads.

"Thanks to hybrid working and cloud technology, employees now have the freedom to work wherever and whenever suits them best – whether that's a local flexible workspace or a co-working centre on the other side of the world," Mark said.

"For many, the days of long daily commutes are over, and there is more freedom to work in new locations."

The company said 60 per cent of hybrid workers are more likely to extend a holiday to work remotely than this time last year.

Surprisingly, Rio de Janeiro in Brazil came out next on the list, followed by Budapest in Hungary.

Meanwhile, Melbourne and Sydney did land on the rankings as two of the top 'workcation' cities in Australia, with Sydney narrowly beating Melbourne.

But they were way down the bottom at number 23 and 24 overall.

New additions to this year's 40-strong ranking also included Seoul, Rome, Cairo, Mexico City, Cape Town, Prague, Orlando and Reykjavik.
