You're less likely to be delayed if you fly from these Aussie airports

That sinking feeling you get when you look at a departure board and see your flight is delayed is familiar to any traveller.

Whether it's due to weather, plane issues or something else, there's not much you can do.

But now number crunchers claim to have worked out the best and worst Aussie airports to use to avoid delays.

The delay to departure report by Esendex analysed hundreds of domestic and international flight routes from Australia's busiest airports over the past year.

Broome Airport came out worst when it came to delays domestically, with 40 per cent of flights it analysed, late.

Darwin and Alice Springs were next.

At Darwin and Alice Springs airports, a quarter of all domestic flights were delayed, according to the report.

Australia's fourth-largest airport, Perth, also made the list, with a fifth of all domestic flights leaving passengers frustrated with delays of 15 minutes or more.

When it came to the most reliable airports for domestic flights it was a joint win.

Avalon Airport near Melbourne, Gold Coast Airport, Hobart Airport and Canberra Airport topped the chart.

Sydney Airport was next.

Of the four most popular airports for international travel - Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney - Sydney Airport emerged as the most reliable.

Researchers said 95 per cent of international flights ran on time or early and just five per cent arriving late.

The most delayed international routes were also identified.

They were Brisbane to Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea, Melbourne to Delhi in India, Sydney to Christchurch in New Zealand and Perth to Tan Son Nhat in Vietnam.

Melbourne Airport was deemed the least reliable for international travel, with 14 per cent of all routes experiencing delays.

Jonathan Walsh, General Manager at Esendex Australia, said how delays are communicated makes a difference.

"Clear, timely updates help travellers make informed decisions, reduce stress, and regain a sense of control when plans change," he said.

It comes after there was good news for Qantas a few weeks ago. Number crunchers said the airline was the 3rd most on time major airline globally in January.

Almost 85 per cent of flights were on time, industry analytics company OAG said.

Chief Executive Officer Qantas Domestic Markus Svensson told 9Travel workers have been "working hard to deliver more reliable services."
