'I absolutely love travelling but there is something I avoid at all costs. Here's why I never eat plane food'
OPINION - I'm going to say something a little controversial – and you're either going to completely agree or disagree with me on this one. It's divisive.
I absolutely love travelling; and have been lucky enough to travel to some of the top destinations in the world and even do the whole 'Aussie in London' thing living overseas and popping here and there.
But there's something I utterly despise about travelling, in fact, the thought of it alone is already making me feel sick and my aversion to it is rising and rising as I write this piece.

I often get weird and blank stares from air hostesses when I tell them about this issue.
For most travellers, when they're on an airplane, they love when the crew turn the lights on and come out wheeling their trolleys. For me, unless it's for a refreshing drink, I can't stand it.
And that's because of plane food. I absolutely HATE plane food.
Now to clarify, I'm in no way calling out the food of any particular airline. I've had some great flight experiences overall.
Instead, I utterly despise all heated plane food equally. I feel so passionately about this that I could talk about it for days.
There have been times I have been sitting on the plane and close to barfing from just the smell of the food coming out. Is it psychological? Is this something anyone else experiences?

Thankfully, travelling post-covid means I can get away with wearing a face mask when food comes out and no one bats an eyelid.
Now this issue has some perks for the people around me. If I'm travelling with family members, my partner or friends, most of them happily take my dinner plate I get for them so as not to waste the food.

I should also clarify, I have never flown business class so probably don't know what I'm missing out on. I've only flown economy or premium economy.
Many of you reading this might be wondering how I survive a long-haul flight, for instance, from Sydney to Europe, which I've done a few times.

Heated food, like curries and rice, chicken or beef or fluffy eggs, I can't stand the smell of or stomach in the air. Getty
I fill up before I get on the flight no matter what time it is, either on the road to the airport or at the airport itself (hello Aussie Macca's!). Last time I flew I took some Macca's on board. See, I'm not that fussy.
If I'm landing in a country and have time to kill, off to the food court I go.
I have eaten and enjoyed drinks on the plane before; but these are often packaged goods like cheese and crackers, or nuts, or fruit and yoghurt – even a bread roll and butter if I'm starving – which helps get me by.

But heated food – like the thought of curries and rice, chicken or beef, or fluffy eggs and whatever else they give us, there's something about it that I just can't stomach while thousands of feet up in the air. even though I love these foods on the ground.
I genuinely consider myself a big foodie and love checking out new restaurants wherever I am, and also love a good home-cooked meal.
But Gordon Ramsay's famous words have aways been in the back of my mind when travelling.
He once aptly told Refinery 29: "There's no f--king way I eat on planes."
"I worked for airlines for ten years, so I know where this food's been and where it goes, and how long it took before it got on board."

And while I have absolutely zero culinary expertise, I have taste buds, and I wholeheartedly agree.
I've heard they flash-freeze and reheat meals, and it's said they're quite over seasoned due to our taste actually changing in the air (that has been scientifically proven).
Just this month, a woman made headlines for making her family deli-style sandwiches while high up in the air.
I don't hate this and they look delicious.
"Mom (sic) was worried we'd get hungry on our five-hour flight without a meal, so she brought stuff to make us sandwiches on the plane! Best mom ever!" the TikTok post was captioned.

"I bet everyone was jealous," one TikToker wrote.
Another added: "It's so cute and caring but so annoying for the other passengers… the smell! (Unless you share lol)"
"How did she clear security with lunch meat in her suitcase?" another remarked.
Maybe I need to start getting that creative. Or bring my mum along more often.
