If you're anything like us, the Christmas holidays feel like they were ages ago, and you're already hanging out for another break.

Thankfully, Easter is just around the corner, bringing with it a long weekend, school holidays, and an excuse to pack your bags.

But with the cost-of-living crisis not really going anywhere, we need to be savvy with our travel choices.

Ok, so overwater bungalows on private islands may be out.

But just because you're travelling on a budget doesn't mean your holiday has to be spent in a tent in your backyard.

To make the most of this time off, Skyscanner has revealed the cheapest destinations Aussies can visit in April to maximise their budgets along with their leave days.

If you want to head overseas, the cheapest spot you can hit up is in Malaysia.

Return flights on Skyscanner to Kuala Lumpur average around $770 in April - and the cheapest day to travel there is a Saturday.

Vietnam is a great option too, and rising in popularity with Aussies. Return flights to Ho Chi Minh City in April start around $942 on average.

Or if you're keen to finally check out Japan after hearing everyone rave about it, the tool says that return flights to Osaka average about $1,272.

Want to stay in Australia? A trip to Adelaide in April will set you back about $391 on average, while return flights to Cairns will be about $340.

Now is a great time to lock down flights, too.

Experts who have crunched the numbers say that the best time to book air travel is four to six weeks out, to get the best possible rates.

A report earlier this week said that international flyers can save an average of $140 if they book within this window.

How to get the most leave over Easter

If you're smart with your leave, you can get 10 days off using just four days of annual leave.

Good Friday is 3 April and Easter Monday is 6 April, enabling workers to redeem four leave days from Tuesday 7 April to Friday 10 April and enjoy a 10-day break from 3 April to 12 April.

Really want to stretch it out? You can bridge Easter to Anzac Day by also taking April 13th to 24th as paid leave.

This gives you a 30-day total holiday with only 18 days of annual leave.
