Yet another airline is going to start charging for hand luggage.

In a growing trend Aussie passengers should keep an eye on, a Canadian airline is bringing in fees for cabin bags on some tickets.

Air Transat will only allow one personal item, such as a handbag or small backpack, in its cheapest fare, Eco Budget, from this week.

Anything else will have to be paid for.

It will affect passengers flying on the airline in the United States and on domestic flights within Canada, Global News reported.

"These changes are intended to offer more competitive base fares, align with current industry practices, and allow travellers to pay only for the services they truly need," the company told the newspaper.

MPs in the country have already raised the issue of passengers being slugged with more fees after another airline started a crackdown.

Air Canada started charging economy passengers to bring anything larger than a handbag or small backpack aboard many flights from January.

That means fliers are likely to have to pay to take popular wheelie suitcases into the cabin with them.

Air Canada confirmed the changes for Economy Basic fares on it's website, for flying within the USA, Mexico, the Caribbean and Canada.

Last month the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security in India introduced new regulations around hand luggage allowances on both domestic and international flights.

So far, no Aussie airlines have started charging for taking bags into the cabin, as long as you stick to the rules.

The increasing amount of hand luggage fees are sparking what is being dubbed as "luggage rage".
