Australia is at growing risk of another measles outbreak due to immunity gaps in the population, new research says.

The infected person stayed in a hostel and visited hair salons, dry cleaners and a major hospital.

A group of researchers looked at the search data that corresponded with media mentions of the non-treatment.

Anyone who has been to these locations recently should monitor for symptoms, authorities say.

A person infected with measles travelled on a number of flights and trains in Sydney on Sunday, NSW Health has warned.

Gold Coast Health raised the alarm today after two individuals unknowingly contracted the viral infection overseas.

Australia has been free of the disease since 2014, it is common in several Southeast Asian countries.

More cases of the highly infectious disease are being reported but vaccine rates are at a 10-year low.

"Other people may have been unknowingly exposed," NSW Health has warned.
