A health warning has been issued for the Gold Coast after two confirmed cases of the highly-infectious measles.

Gold Coast Health raised the alarm today after two individuals unknowingly contracted the viral infection overseas.

Anybody who visited or works at the exposure sites is warned to watch out for symptoms of measles for up to three weeks from the exposure date.

Signs of measles include a fever, cough, runny nose and sore eyes or a blotchy, red rash.

The viral disease is highly contagious and is spread through airborne droplets.

Measles can cause serious complications, including pneumonia and encephalitis and can require hospitalisation

In Australia, two doses of the measles vaccine are offered to children under the National Immunisation Program, which provides long-term protection from the virus.
