A P-plater who allegedly steered with his knees while buttering a bagel in busy traffic has offered a simple explanation when confronted: “I know that was stupid, but I was hungry.”

The 29-year-old was pulled over in Newtown, near Toowoomba, about 3.50pm on Monday after he was allegedly spotted driving a silver Honda HR-V with his hands off the wheel.

Video released by Queensland Police shows an officer questioning the Glenvale man over his unusual driving.

“Can you explain to me why, in four lanes of traffic that’s quite busy at this time of day, that you thought steering a motor vehicle on your Ps with your knee while you buttered a bagel would be a great idea?” the officer asks.

“I know that was stupid, but I was hungry,” the driver replies.

But the bagel was not his only problem.

The officer then told the man his registration had expired three days earlier, on September 4, meaning the vehicle was unregistered.

“It was the main reason I pulled you over,” the officer told him.

The driver was fined $1104 for driving without due care and attention and driving an unregistered vehicle, and received three demerit points.

Darling Downs District Officer Acting Superintendent Kelly Hanlen said motorists needed to stay focused on driving at all times.

“Taking your hands and focus away from the task of driving, even for something as seemingly harmless as preparing food, can have serious consequences,” Hanlen said.

“I want to remind motorists there is no meal, message or other distraction worth risking your safety or the safety of other road users.

“If you’re driving, keep your attention on the road and your hands where they belong – on the wheel.”
