Two-time champion Osaka out

Simon Brunsdon

Japanese champion Naomi Osaka has recorded her worst US Open result by exiting in the first round to American No.19 seed Danielle Collins.

Osaka, still only 24 years old, won at Flushing Meadows in 2018 and 2020. She also has two Australian Open titles to her name.

But on Tuesday she crashed out in a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 defeat to Collins on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Osaka also lost her first-round match at Roland-Garros earlier this year, and missed Wimbledon entirely.

Collins had previously never won a set against Osaka.

"When you lose to someone three times, you get a lot of information on what you can do better," Collins said.

"With Naomi being the player she is she definitely whooped me the last time, so I have to go out and learn from that and make adjustments."

Osaka vs Collins RESULT

Simon Brunsdon

American No.19 seed Danielle Collins has beaten two-time US Open champion Naomi Osaka in the first round.

Collins had never taken a set off the Japanese star in their two previous meetings, but did it convincingly today to win 7-6 (75), 6-3.

A fantastic match, particularly for the opening round.

American forced to retire

American men's player Jack Sock has been forced to retire injured from his first-round match against Diego Schwartzman.

Sock won the first two sets, but then was badly hampered and surrendered with the match poised at 6-3, 7-5, 0-6, 0-1.

Emma Raducanu became only the third defending US Open champion to lose in the first round, eliminated by Alizé Cornet 6-3, 6-3.

Raducanu, who was 18 and ranked 150th when she won the title as a qualifier a year ago, was bothered by hand blisters — she took a medical timeout for treatment after the first set — and was outplayed by Cornet, a 32-year-old from France who also upset No.1 Iga Swiatek at Wimbledon.

"Obviously really disappointing. Really sad to leave here. It's probably my favorite tournament. But also, I mean, in a way, (I'm) happy, because it's a clean slate," Raducanu said.

"I'm going to drop down the rankings. (Will) climb my way back up."
