Consequences of collision laid bare

Sam Cane made one fatal mistake in the Rugby World Cup final.

A high shot on Springboks centre Jesse Kriel condemned the All Blacks captain to the sidelines after his yellow card was upgraded to red.

Despite playing most of the match with 14 men, New Zealand came agonisingly close to defeating South Africa in a one-point contest.

"Just so much hurt right now," Cane said at Stade de France.

"It's actually hard to find words to explain it. It's so, so hard. I'm feeling so much hurt, but I am so proud of the group the way they fought back and gave ourselves a shot of winning that game...

"So there is a lot of heartbreak in the sheds right now. It is hard."
